LETTERS TO THE EDITOR; Praised and rewarded
Donald Trump indicates tyrannical aspirations by refusing to heed existing laws, the prerogatives of the House of Representatives, and the Constitution (“Trump team resists Congress’ oversight,” May 5). One answer is tyrannicide. Advocacy of tyrannicide has a long history, including Marcus Tullius Cicero’s De Officiis and John of Salisbury. The latter legitimized tyrannicide, in the Policraticus, (circa 1159): “Between a tyrant and a prince there is this single or chief difference, that the latter obeys the law and rules the people by its dictates, accounting himself as but their servant.” Thomas Aquinas’s Commentary on the Sentences of Peter Lombard stated that one may even be “praised and rewarded” for being the “one who liberates his country by killing a tyrant.” Karl Marx, of course, would discount tyrannicide because the problem, for him, is not individual rulers, but the system, itself, which tyrannicide cannot cure.
