Introduction to Human Geography - Midterm Study Guide: Folk Housing Flash Cards

Inspect the photo and answer the question below.

This is an adobe house. It is most common in the Southwestern part of the United States, in the areas formerly occupied by the Spanish. It is built of mud or earthen bricks and features small windows, thick walls and a flat roof. These features make it well suited to the desert environment, where hot days and cool nights are common. The house’s thick walls provide insulation from the heat and radiate heat into the interior during the cool nights. The flat roof is ideal for collecting scarce rainfall.

Answer the questions below:

This is a ___________ house.

It is common in the __________ region.

A common characteristic is the roof, which is __________ to collect _______.
