Introduction to Human Geography - Midterm Study Guide: Folk Housing Flash Cards

Inspect the photo and answer the question below.

This house is a Charleston House. It can be found in the Lowland South, but it’s only common in Charleston, South Carolina and other older coastal cities on the Atlantic. Its narrow end is turned toward the street and, reputedly, the ocean in order to catch sea breezes. It is also elevated, perhaps to help with summertime heat and coastal flooding. It also features side porches on upper floors, again perhaps an adaptation to heat.

Answer the question below:

  1. This is a ___________ house.
  2. You are most likely to find it in older, southern cities on the ___________ coast of the United States.
  3. It features __________ built on to the upper floors of the house.
