Community Service Mapping

For the first part of this project, students will contribute to the construction of a map that will be useful for persons with Autism (or related spectrum disorders) and for their families and/or friends who live in the San Fernando Valley.

Later in the semester, the class will contribute to a map that can be used by a group in the Inland Empire. (click to open in Google Earth)

Student Learning Outcomes:

Below are the learning outcomes for this assignment.

  1. Students will use an online mapping software to construct a map and convert address data to latitude and longitude coordinate data.
  2. Students will contribute data via spreadsheet to a 'cloud computing' application, to create a wiki-style map with fellow students.
  3. Students will demonstrate a commitment to serving their community by participating in the construction of resource for others.

Task 1: Team

Your instructor will place you into a team. Each team will be given a resource category to research and collect data for. Each student in the group will be expected to find at least five resources in that category. If five can not be found for each student in the category, then contact the instructor for additional help.

Task 2: Enter Data

Once you have found information on the five community resources useful to our target audience, select the appropriate category from the drop box below, then enter the requisite information in the subsequent response boxes.

Your task individually and as a group is to be thoughtful about the type of resources autistic young adults and/or friends, family would find useful.

Consult the following webform below and with your group partners

Each of the entries MUST contain the following information:

1. The name of the recommended place
2. A category of the place
3. A street address
4. City
5. State
6. ZIP code
7. A descriptive account of the place in question
8. Your name

Entries should strive to also include the following:

9. A contact phone number
10. A contact fax number
11. A web address
12. A contact person’s name

Make sure your information is accurate. No longitudes should start with anything other than (NEGATIVE 118).

When you have completed the first entry and clicked SUBMIT, the page will appear to go blank...just scroll up....and you will see a prompt to "Go back to the form", click on it and repeat the process until you have completed the requisite number of entries.
