Course Requirements and Method of Evaluation

1) Students are expected to attend class and participate by asking questions and answering questions raised by the instructors.

2) There will be a quiz given during each Thursday period based on material covered for that week (see lecture schedule below for topics). This constitutes 20% of your grade. The quiz will be handed out at the beginning of each class. 15 minutes prior to the end of the class, you will begin working on the quiz. You will form groups of three and members of a group can consult each other on the quiz. Solutions to the quizzes will be presented at the beginning of the next class.

3) Homework problems are assigned online via Mastering Physics. Your new textbook includes the access code to the following website http://www.masteringphysics.com/. You will need to register on this site and select a login name and password. After you have registered, you can login and use the Course ID: spring09lim. Each student’s homework is made up of the same set of questions but many of the questions will have numbers that are algorithmically generated so each student's answers will be different. The homework will be worth 10% of the total grade. Solutions to all assigned end-of-chapter problems will be available for download shortly after your homework is due (see Mastering Physics website for the due date and time).

4) There will be two exams that make up 40% of the total grade, and one final comprehensive exam that makes up 30% of the total grade. Mark your calendar with the exam dates listed below. You are responsible for being on time. If you have a religious holiday conflict, let me know during the first week of classes. You will be provided with an equations sheet during the exams. The Student Conduct Code (pp 586-590 of the 2008-2010 University catalog) will be strictly observed. During an exam you must avoid looking at the work of others or I will be forced to call it to your attention in front of your peers.

Grading Criteria

The grade distribution will be as follows.
A 88% and higher
B 72-87%
C 55-71%
D 41-54%
F 40% and below

We use the +/- system so in each range (no A+), the low end will be minus and the high end plus.
