DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY

Why Study Philosophy at CSUN?

The Philosophy Department at Cal State Northridge offers a wide variety of courses and options for meeting each student's individual needs whether you major or minor in philosophy.

Even if you do not major or minor in philosophy, you will find a number of courses that are relevant to your major and to many different career choices. In addition to courses in almost all the traditional areas of philosophy, we offer courses in applied philosophy, such as business ethics, sexual ethics, and philosophy of law; courses in Asian philosophy and feminism; and courses that link philosophy to other disciplines, including politics, religion, literature, art, linguistics, the natural and social sciences, mathematics, and computer science.

Whichever courses or options you choose, you will find a supportive and cooperative learning environment. Small upper-division classes and seminars create a close working relationship among students and faculty. Study in the major culminates with the Senior Research Seminar, in which you and your fellow students collaborate on individual or group projects that you choose for yourselves. The Student Philosophy Society provides a comfortable social setting in which you can freely exchange ideas with other students and form lasting friendships.
