Hello Colleagues,
I hope this October newsletter finds you energized and in a positive spirit about the Fall ’22 semester. So much is happening on campus now; it truly is gratifying to see our smiling students in-person and to casually cross paths again with so many of you.
It has been a busy month, and two of the events I participated in really illustrated the “why and how” of our university – that is, why we come to work every day (the students!) and how we make difference (our outstanding faculty and staff!).
I had the pleasure of speaking at our New Student Convocation, an event which was enthusiastically attended by freshmen and transfer students. Roughly 2,000 students processed down Matador Walk and across University Lawn, where they were welcomed to the Convocation by President Beck and Vice President Watkins. The respective Deans and Associate Deans of each of our colleges asked their students to stand and be recognized, and the evening culminated in the singing of the CSUN alma mater, “Hail to the Matadors.” It really was an inspiring occasion.
The 14th Annual Research Fellows Colloquium took place on October 13th at the University Library. Fascinating presentations were given by distinguished faculty, including: Christina Hennessey, Collection Access & Management Services, University Library; Katherine Lorenz, Criminology and Justice Studies, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences; Liviu Marinescu, Music, Mike Curb College of the Arts, Media & Communication; Loren Naidoo, Management, David Nazarian College of Business and Economics; and Maryam Tabibzadeh, Manufacturing Systems Engineering & Management, College of Engineering & Computer Science. I was particularly proud of the breadth of research, coming from such diverse departments and colleges, and it underscored the many ways CSUN makes a difference in our community and in fact, in our world.
Enjoy this issue of the newsletter and be sure to take a look at the many opportunities and events for faculty and staff offered across our campus. We have a lot to be proud of!
