Self-care, compassion, and PRIDE month

June 15, 2020

Dear COE community,

Ongoing protests due to anti-Black racism in America continue to send a message of anger and pain over the need for change. These protests signal that enough is enough. Another message also is emerging, one of compassion. Compassion for those victims who have repeatedly experienced injustices, compassion for those facing their own implicit biases and privilege and now choosing to speak out for change, compassion for one another as we move through this ugly time together to work toward a better, more just world.

June is National PRIDE Month, a time to celebrate the LBGTQIA+ community including gay, transgender and nonbinary individuals with openness, support, and compassion for injustices suffered. Marcia Sutton wrote in an article entitled National PRIDE Month Is a Time for Learning for Schools and Families “When any under-represented group is attacked because of skin color, race, religion, or sexual and gender identity, we all suffer. Let’s work to humanize all who are different from us and try to understand the pain oppressed groups experience when ignorance and hatred tread on the American principles of justice for all. Silence is not golden when we see bigotry of any kind directed at anyone. Take PRIDE in being a voice for the oppressed. As we’ve heard so often these last few months, ‘We are all in this together.’”.
