Award Recipients

Certificates of Excellences and Certificates of Distinction awards are given annually, by the Department of Economics at Cal State Northridge, at the Economics Department Awards Ceremony.

Save the date: the 2013 awards ceremony and reception will be Friday, May 10 at 3:30pm in JH 4117. Look for an email early Spring semester.

Certificate of Excellence
: awarded to students whose grade point averages in their economics classes taken at CSUN are between 3.5 and 4.0

Certificate of Distinction: awarded to students whose grade point averages in their economics classes taken at CSUN are between 3.0 and 3.49

Students are eligible for these certificates in the semester they graduate once they have completed five upper division economics courses at CSUN. All economics course grades (upper and lower division) earned at CSUN are used to calculate the CSUN economics grade point average. The spring awards, given in May, are made based on grades in January, so Spring semester grades are not included. Students do not need to apply to be included in the Spring semester awards event. If you are graduating in Spring or Summer 2013 and become eligible for this award based on grades from the current spring semester, please fill out an application after your grades from the spring semester and/or summer session post and take it to the Economics Department Office or mail it to Amy Louff, Department of Economics, CSUN, Northridge, CA 91330-8374.

Richard Friedman Memorial Award:

When Professor Richard Friedman died in 1997, the Department of Economics established a memorial award in his name. Rick was always the friend of students in need. For this reason, we thought he would be most honored by an award to a student who had overcome significant adversity (personal, health, financial, family, political). The Department of Economics gives a cash award of $300 in the spring semester of each year to the economics major who has overcome significant odds in getting his or her education--the Richard Friedman Memorial Award. Rick was a great professor and friend to us all.

To apply, the only requirement is that you have completed five upper division economics classes (current semester classes do not count). To apply, fill out the application by Friday, April 26, 2013. The award is given out at the Economics Department's annual Awards Event.

To make a donation to the Friedman Award Fund, contact or send a check to:

Scholarship Money for Graduate Exam Preparation Programs (LSAT, GRE, GMAT, etc.) and out-of-state Summer Internships

The Department of Economics has funds for scholarships (up to $400) for students who are taking Graduate Exam Preparation Programs or who are traveling out of state for Summer Internships related to the study of economics. Please fill out the application form provided here and submit it to the Economics Department Chair. There is no deadline on this; scholarships are awarded as they are applied for. If you receive financial aid on this campus, this scholarship would reduce the amount of aid you receive by an equal amount.  On the CSUN campus, the Tseng College offers graduate exam preparation courses.
