Practicing Fairness
This project will explore varying roles and contributions to Individualized Education Program (IEP) team meetings by providing an opportunity for faculty and students from different disciplines (Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Special Education, School Psychology & School Leadership) to share expertise and knowledge. K-12 educators from the community and representaives from the Family Focus Empowerment Center will also be a part of the instructional process, adding in their varying frames of reference and expertise. Faculty and students in three classes from their respective academic programs will convene during Spring Semester 2011 on two separate evenings to engage in activities and discussions including: the function of the IEP meeting, roles of the participants, role-playing of an IEP meeting with multiple perspectives represented, conflict resolution, advocacy, and role-playing of a contentious IEP situation.
Anticipated Outcomes:
To learn about the variety of perspectives involved in a productive IEP meeting including,
1) Create transdisciplinary curriculum for two shared class meetings involving faculty from EPC, SPED, EED, SED, ELPS and others.
2) Conduct joint presentations and collect data on participants' perceptions and learnings from the process.
3) Disseminate faculty and student changes in knowledge, skills, and attitudes through symposium presentations and articles.
CSUN faculty will share expertise across disciplines to increase their own knowledge base about the IEP process in special education.
