Establishing Harmony

The Transdisciplinary Bridging Cultures Project for Elementary Education Teachers is the result of a recent CSUN-based study (Rothstein-Fisch & Zgourou, in preparation) demonstrating that pre-service teachers appreciate the framework of individualism and collectivism as a way to understand cultural value conflicts between home and schools. In evaluating a workshop on the framework of individualism and collectivism, pre-service teachers cited the value of examples of real-life elementary teachers who used the framework in their classes (K-5), but wanted to know more about how teachers can create more harmony between home and school for culturally diverse students. Specifically, teacher candidates requested more examples of how to bridge cultures that they could take into classrooms, moving the theory into their practice.

Anticipated Outcomes:

1) Teaching modules for use by Elementary Education professors working with CSUN student candidates.
2) Course materials that include readings and assignments to foster deeper understanding of how culture plays out in schools.
3) Documentation of how CSUN students may shift their thinking about transdisciplinary perspectives in elementary education.
4) Showcasing the findings of our work in journals and symposia.
