A faculty member in the Department of Special Education and a faculty member in the Adapted Physical Education (APE), Department of Kinesiology will be co-planning and co-teaching four lessons (two in the fall semester and two in the spring semester). Classes and topics identified in the fall include: SPED 400 (Developmental Differences and Implications in Special Education) & KIN 547 (Health Education, Exercise, & Nutrition) and SPED 420 (Collaboration and Differentiation in the Inclusive Classroom) & KIN 547 (Assessment & IEP). The first half of each session will consist of faculty co-teaching a lesson on the topic and the 2nd half of the session will consist of students completing an activity. For the activities, students will be grouped together from the two departments and class sessions will be held online via Elluminate webconferencing. Interactive components will be embedded throughout the lessons, as well as use of chat rooms for the activities.
Topics covered in each lesson include: 1) Health Education, Exercise, & Nutrition - Describing the health status of children and youth and effective strategies for encouraging a healthy lifestyle and groups will research health curriculum topics, 2) Assessment and the IEP – Describing the assessment process and steps in developing an Individualized Education Program with groups developing an IEP from a case study, 3) Positive Behavior Intervention & Social Stories – Describing behavior interventions and the importance of learning appropriate social skills and groups will develop a “social story” that includes positive behavior interventions, 4) Typical and Atypical Motor Development – Describing typical motor development and motor development assessment tools and groups will use case studies to develop an intervention plan for improving atypical motor areas identified.
Anticipated Outcomes:
1) Four PowerPoint lessons developed for each lesson covering content identified in the four areas:
1. Health Education, Exercise, and Nutrition;
2. Assessment and the Individual Education Program (IEP;
3. Positive Behavior Intervention (PBI);
4. Typical and Atypical Motor Development.
2) Four recorded 1- 1 ½ hr Elluminate sessions covering 4 topics co-taught by two faculty
3) Group activities for each lesson (research nutrition curriculums, IEP case studies, case scenarios of social stories, case scenarios of students with motor delays)
