Here’s hoping the lockdown won’t take out college athletics

Even as the university generally is a large business, athletics as one of its most visible departments is a business in its own right. UCR plays in a Big West Conference that counts a lot of state schools among its ranks, and several in the Southland – UC Irvine, Cal State Northridge, Long Beach State, and Cal State Fullerton – are also Division I but none of these schools is anything like another Division I school, such as, say, UCLA. No huge basketball arenas, no football team with a big stadium, no huge TV contract with the conference paying each school a pile of cash.
