“I would say none of the existing Republican candidates were really catching fire,” observed Lawrence Becker, professor of political science at Cal State Northridge. “What seems to be materializing pretty quickly is a race with a former member of Congress who represented the district and, I think, is still pretty well-liked and certainly has a lot of name recognition in the district, running against a star name among Democrats.”
