roxane i berger's "message in the music"

Roxane I. Berger is a faculty in Family and Consumer Sciences/Interior Design program, and she is an an alum who received a BA in Fine Art in 1978 and a MA in Studio Art in 2004.  Working together with her husband in the company the two founded, Topanga Architecture and Design, she is an interior and lighting designer. The couple also lives in Topanga. Berger says she is inspired by the natural beauty surrounding her.

This spring, Berger's talents as an abstract artist were celebrated at the CSUN Soraya with a reception and weeks-long gallery show, "Music in Motion" held on the second level gallery. The show completed its run in June, 2019.

roxane bergerThese paintings are a visual exploration of my muse, music.  Whether a formally composed piece, the lapping of waves or the rustling of leaves, music emerges from all the sounds around us, adding color and rhythm to our lives.  Like the ancient Greeks and Chinese, I feel music has the power to heal and enliven, transform and transport.  It can deliver us to distant places and times.  The ancient Chinese characters and modern musical symbols embedded in the paintings are icons which convey the transcendent and timeless quality of music.

I am pleased that these paintings are displayed in a building designated for the performing arts: music, dance, and theater.  This is a synergistic synchronicity that adds one more layer to this exhibition.  The architectural pattern of the window banding in the gallery space compliment the horizontal and scroll formats of the compositions.

Roxane Berger is an adjunct professor of Interior Design at CSUN, where she is also an alumnus, having received a BA in Fine Art in 1978 and a MA in Studio Art in 2004.  She currently works as an interior and lighting designer at the company she and her husband founded, Topanga Architecture and Design.  She lives in Topanga, inspired by the natural beauty surrounding her. She has been a member of the CSUN Family and Consumer Sciences faculty since 2004.
