Westminster welcomes new associate pastor

The Los Angeles native graduated from California State University at Northridge with a major in film. She is the daughter of a teacher (mom) and actor (her late father). Her dad, W.G. MacMillan, was a regular on “General Hospital” and appeared in movies, she said, where he seemed to play “either villains or judges.” -- Austin Daily Herald

Friends of Oviatt Library Honor Twins with Award for Nonfiction

California State University, Northridge’s Friends of the Oviatt Library will present identical twins Erin K. Schonauer and Jamie C. Schonauer with the San Fernando Valley Award for Nonfiction for their book, “Early Burbank,” which explores the city’s historic journey with the entertainment industry, media and aerospace. -- SCV News

Prospecting ways to revise history

Did people during the gold rush kill Indians in California? Absolutely. In his masterful 2016 book An American Genocide: The United States and the California Indian Catastrophe, 1846-1873, UCLA history professor Benjamin Madley documented how vigilantes, soldiers and regular citizens slaughtered California’s native population to the point that it went from about 150,000 people to just 30,000. Scholarships for nursing, health tech students

The students include: Kira Bunker, a graduate of Mount Miguel High School in Spring Valley who is now enrolled in a radiology tech program at California State University Northridge; Breana Johnson, who is studying to become a pharmacy technician; April Streeter, a graduate of West Hills High School in Santee who wants to work as a licensed vocational nurse; Orphelia Williams of El Cajon, a pharmacy technician student; Marti Wilmot of Lakeside, also a pharmacy technician student. Johnson, Streeter, Williams and Wilmot all are students at the Grossmont Health Occupations Center (HOC) in Santee. HOC is operated by the Grossmont Union High School District's Grossmont Adult Education program. -- La Mesa Patch

GO Jazz Big Band | GO Jazz Big Band Performs Spring Concert Featuring Golden Valley Jazz Band

“The GO Jazz Big Band brings together 20 outstanding musicians to play the music of the legendary big bands as well as contemporary favorites in a big band setting. The band covers all styles of jazz and popular music including Basie, the Beatles, and beyond. The GO Jazz Big Band maintains a busy concert schedule, performing at West Ranch High School in Stevenson Ranch, Typhoon in Santa Monica, Cafe Cordiale in Sherman Oaks, and local jazz festivals. Founded in 2011 by Bob Babko and now directed by Brian Leff, this band includes some phenomenal players who have played with the likes of Maria Schneider, Russ Ferrante, Alan Pasqua, Bill Watrous, Louis Bellson, Randy Brecker, the Tonight Show Band, and many others. Players in this band have been part of some of the most outstanding college jazz programs in the nation including Cal Arts, UCLA, USC, Berklee, Cal State University Northridge, UNLV, and the University of Oregon. Rainbow Wahine softball's Lopez and Heen honored by BWC

Long Beach State claimed three of the honors as Cielo Meza was named Pitcher of the Year, Naomi Hernandez earned Freshman Field Player of the Year and Kim Sowder claimed a share of the Coach of the Year honor. Sowder split the award with Kelly Ford of regular season champion Cal State Fullerton, marking the first time since 2008 that the league's top coaching honor was shared. CSUN's Savannah Horvath was named Player of the Year while Defensive Player of the Year accolades went to Hannah Rodriguez of UC Riverside. The Freshman Pitcher of the Year honor went to UC Davis' Brooke Yanez. -- KHON

United Friends of the Children Adds Three New Members to its Board of Directors

Demonte "Tray" Thompson is one of 12 siblings from Compton, California. As a foster youth, Tray found education to be a safe-haven from the trouble that surrounded him. Tray earned a bachelor's degree in finance from California State University, Northridge (CSUN). Currently, he serves as a Regional Marketing Specialist at AIG. An active leader at AIG, Tray is President of the Los Angeles Young Professionals Employee Resource Group. Beginning his career at CSUN, he taught financial literacy to hundreds of students. -- Digital Journal
