Course Objective: This course is a mathematics course focusing on elementary school mathematics. The main goal is to acquire a solid knowledge of that material. However, an elementary school teacher needs to know much more, including: (i) how to present the material in the simplest, clearest way, (ii) the appropriate sequential order for developing mathematics
skills, (iii) what the students will find difficult and what errors they are likely to make, and (iv) how each topic helps advance the mathematical level of the students.

Texts:

  1. Elementary Mathematics for Teachers, by Thomas Parker and Scott Baldridge
  2. Primary Mathematics Textbooks (U.S. Edition) - Primary Mathematics 3A, 4A, 5A, 6A and Workbook 5A.

List of Chapters Covered:
All sections except 1.7, part of 6.6, and part of 9.4
Chapter 1 Place Value and Models for Arithmetic
Chapter 2 Mental Math and Word Problems
Chapter 3 Algorithms
Chapter 4 Pre-algebra
Chapter 5 Factors, Primes, and Proofs
Chapter 6 Fractions
Chapter 7 Ratios, Percentages, and Rates
Chapter 8 Negative Numbers and Integers
Chapter 9 Decimals, Rationals, and Real Numbers

There is a Homework Set for each section in the text and homework exercises will be assigned with every class. In addition, there will be a number of collected homework assignments. These will be graded and the problems will either be from the text or on a separate handout. it is extremely important to keep up with all assignments. No late homework will be accepted.

Attendance is an essential part of this course. Attendance means being on-time and not leaving the classroom before the end of the lecture. Cell-phones and pagers must be turned off.
It is your responsibility to drop the class if you do not intend on finishing it.

Exams: There will be three in-class examinations and a comprehensive common final on Saturday, May 9 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM (room to be announced). Please arranged your work schedule and exam dates for CSET or other exams so there is not a conflict. There will be no make-ups on tests or quizzes. In case of an emergency, contact me immediately. Be prepared
to provide evidence of the emergency.

Calculators: Calculators will not be used for this class, and will not be allowed for exams. A successful elementary school teacher should be confident and comfortable solving problems mentally and on paper. One of the goals of this course is to develop that ability.

Recommendation for a review of basic algebra: Facility in arithmetic and elementary algebra will be assumed on the final exam. For a review of basic algebra, students are encouraged to purchase ALEKS, and interactive computer program. Information about purchasing ALEKS online is posted on the course webpage (http://www.csun.edu/math/210.html).

Tutoring: In addition to my office hours, free tutoring will be available for Math 210/310 students in the Math Tutoring Center SH 274.

Grading: I will use the following grading system and will compute your grade as follows:
3 in-class exams 20% each
Collected homework 10%
Final exam 30%
