COURSEWORK

Your final grade will be based on the following work:

Homework Assignments (25%)

2 Exams (25%)

Midterm Exam (25%)

Final Exam (25%)

HOMEWORK
Homework assignments for this class are very hard to grade, so my primary criterion is neatness. Please type your homework assignments wherever possible.

GRADING PROCEDURES
Grades are not assigned on a strict mathematical basis; that is, your grade is not based solely on the number of questions you get wrong. Instead, I make a judgement about how well you know and understand the material based on how many mistakes you make and the nature of those mistakes. One thing I look for in particular is whether you have memorised and can use grammatical terminology. Note that if you misspell a technical term we study I will assume that you have failed on both these counts.

I have a special procedure for grading homework. I begin by assigning every piece of homework an F. If the homework is neat, the grade becomes a C. If the homework shows that the student has a fair understanding of the material covered, the grade becomes a B. If the homework shows that the student has an excellent understanding of the material covered, the grade becomes an A. Late homework assignments will be lowered by one full grade.

There is no automatic credit for participation or attendance. However, I will take these factors into account in the case of borderline grades. I regret that I am unable to handle extra credit assignments.

COURSE WEB SITES
.Currently, course material can be accessed at http://www.csun.edu/~sk36711/WWW2/engl400/syllabus.htm. There is also an external set of interactive texts and exercises which you may find useful (and interesting and fun). Because the site is not yet compatible with all computers and browsers, it is not yet required for the course. At the moment, the site works best with Internet Explorer 5.0 for Microsoft Windows, although other browsers and systems may work as well. If you would like to go to this site, the address is http://www.vcsun.org/~kleinman/HELWeb/title.htm.
