Each of these assignments were due more than one week ago.

Now that the answers are public, I can no longer accept "late" submissions from students and a grade of zero will be assigned for the students.

Writing Lab A- Citations (sample good answers)

02: Despite what dog lovers may believe, cats make excellent housepets. 1
03: Contrary to popular belief, cats can be trained.  In her research, Katherine Litter successfully used tuna snack incentives to train cats to flush a toilet. 1
04: Research into cat behavior refutes the popular notion that cats cannot be trained.  In fact, a study has shown that eighty five percent of cats can learn to flush a toilet within one week when tuna snacks are used as an incentive (Litter 1992,85). 1
05: Bean argues that it is imperative for planners to devote more attention to the welfare of those visited (1985, 179) 1

 

Writing Lab B - Composition Tips/Techniques

 

01: Find a topic you are interested in and make sure that it allows a workable research question. 1
02: Ask questions of the data that you have already found. 1
03: 1. In a thesis, choose a side and support with a clear, understandable idea. 1
03: 2 . Use "if and then" when stating a hypothesis in order to show a clear correlation. 1
03: 3. Hypotheses must be testable and developed with previous observations. (OTHER ANSWERS POSSIBLE) 1
04: Do minority neighborhoods have more liquor stores than health food stores and is the reverse true in white neighborhoods? 1
05: HYPOTHESIS: Neighborhoods with less than 50% white will have a greater per capita density of liquor stores than the county as a whole and a lower per capita density of health food stores than the county wide averages. In neighborhoods over 50% white, the opposite will be true. 1
06: I used to love going to the movies when I was a kid. It was such a wonderful treat, but anymore I'd just rather stay home because moviegoing has become such a drag. 1
07: It's better to watch movies at home than to go to a movie theater or cinema. 1
08: Just getting to the movie theater itself is the first major challenge. 1
09: The theater itself, once a place to experience luxury, has become unpleasant . 1

In order to recieve five points in this category, the outline must be a topic sentence outline and the reader must be able to discern the entire arguement from the sentence provided by the student. 5

 

Writing Lab C - Research Papers

* Most students had trouble recognizing the "categories" that were included with the literature review. Four areas were reviewed:
1. Geographic literature on banking and credit
2. Literature on access to credit, parks and other amenities among minorities.
3. Literature on Landscapes as evidence of culture/economics and a force for change or stability
4. Literature on methods used to measure accessibility.

* Students also had trouble recognizing the research question (broad) and the hypothesis (narrow).
