Purpose of the Literature Review:

This is from a web page at the University of Melbourne. It's a succinct accounting of what is expected of a literature review in the Department of Geography. For more, click on the link to the right: (http://www.services.unimelb.edu.au/llsu/resources/thesis/pg006.html )

"The aim of a critical review (of the literature) is to demonstrate that the writer has extensively researched the literature and critically evaluated its quality. It is not enough to describe what others have discovered: You need to view their work with your own insight. Thus an effective review presents, analyses and synthesises material from a range of sources….An effective literature review should have a clear focus and direction and be presented in a logical, clear and well organised manner using academic style both correctly and consistently"

SLO 2.2

Construction of an effective literature review is evidence of your master of the Geography Department's Student Learning Objective 2.2, which states students construct an effective review of existing research.
