Faculty and Facilities

The Geographer's Craft

Majoring in Geography at CSUN has a number of advantages over majoring in other disciplines here, or taking geography at another university. We have a talented, dedicated faculty and outstanding facilities and resources. Unfortunately some students manage to wind their way through the program here without recognizing the positive characteristics of the faculty or the richness of our resource base. This exercise is designed to help make sure you are aware of the resources here in Geography. Many students don't realize that we really have some great resources here at CSUN, and because of their ignorance, they can not put themselves in a position to take advantage of the resources available to them.

Learning Objectives

  1. Students will identify and characterize the staff and facilities available to geography majors at CSUN.
  2. The student will visit the map and geography library at CSUN demonstrate at least a rudimentary awareness of the resources available at this library
  3. Students will visit the GIS-Cartography laboratory at CSUN, acquire an account and demonstrate basic familiarity with the lab.
  4. Students will visit at least one geography professor and report back to the group the findings of a five minute interview with one member of the faculty.

Instructions

You may want to first print this assignment, take it with you to the places you must visit and then return to complete it on-line before it is due.

TASK A: THE MAP LIBRARY AT CSUN

First you should become familiar with the Map and Geography Library at CSUN.  It's located in room Sierra Hall 171 and it is the nicest facility of its sort I have found anywhere in the United States. You must visit it both on-line and in person to complete this section of the assignment.

Step 1.  Go to the geography department's website.  Look for the link to the map library.  Answer the following questions:

1.  Under the link "HOLDINGS", you'll see Sanborn Fire Insurance Atlases.  For what purpose might a geography student use the Sanborn Collection?

Step 2. Visit the map library itself. Make a note of the hours listed on the map library's website. Several of the useful holdings they have for you to use include topographic maps, atlases and also some books and journals. Answer the following questions:

Question 2. Another holding in the collection are past masters' theses by students here at CSUN. Search the theses by topic and find the last name of the student who did the most recent master's thesis on a tourism geography subject.

Question 3: Since you are going to visit the Map Library, you should know the name of the librarian. What is her name?

Step 3. Ask the librarian to help you find the quadrangle topographic map for Canoga Park. This quadrangle contains CSUN.

Wow. Bet you didn't think there was a place that nice in Sierra Hall did you? No, I didn't.

Question What is the approximate elevation of the campus (Sierra Hall)?:

Question 5:What is the name of the railroad that operates (or did) a rail line just south of CSUN?

Question 6: What is the magnetic declination reported for the Canoga Park quadrangle?

Step 4. Find the atlas We the People by James Allen and Eugene Turner. Answer the following questions:

Question 7: What is the call number of this text?

Question 8:What two states have the largest concentrations of people with French ancestry?

Question 9: What graduated symbol is used to display the number of Jewish persons on the map on page 112?

Question 10: Fill in the blank: In the US map of percent blacks (African-Americans) by county, the map key informs the reader that the county with the highest percent black people in the US is: percent African-American

Step 5: The map library has some of the geography's most commonly used text and journals. One is Roger, Viles and Goudies' Student Companion to Geography. You might want to go out and buy this for yourself, but in the meantime, you can use it at the library. Find this book and answer the following questions:

Question 11: Why was Fay Gale so attracted to geography? (one word answer)

Question 12:  In part II of this volume, several of the more popular subdisciplines of geography are featured. Name two.

Question 13:(Fill in the Blank)  In the chapter devoted to sources of data information for the United States, the author recommends that the best place to start is the: Statistical _______________ of the United States.

TASK B: VISIT THE CARTOGRAPHY AND GIS LAB AT CSUN

We have a really great GIS-Cartography lab. It is a shame when students don't use (or even know about) this resource.

In order to ensure that you are at least familiar with the GIS lab, please visit the lab in 105 Sierra Hall. You should do two things while you are there: 1) Get a logon (or account) from Jason Mejia (mu-hee-uh). I'll be able to tell when you have one. 2. Get the information you need to answer the following questions:

Question 14:  How many PC (personal computers) are in the lab room 103?

Question 15:  What version number of ArcMap is currently installed on the PCs in the lab?

15. TASK C: VISIT WITH A FACULTY MEMBER

The other major resource we have is our faculty. Because of the way scheduling works, many students are unaware of who the faculty are and where faculty interests (research, teaching and other) lie. This last task is to get you to go meet at least one professor that you may not know and report back to the group on your findings. By the deadline posted in the schedule, you must make contact, interview and post a report regarding the faculty member listed to the right of your name on the list below

INTERVIEW LIST -STUDENTS FACULTY

Many of the faculty are busy, but we all have doors that are open to students. Introduce yourself as a student in Geography 300 course and let them know you have been asked to visit them as part of a class assignment. You should try to phone or email your interviewee in advance. Make sure to ask your faculty member if they have a few minutes (no more than five) to talk to you about being a geography major. Hopefully everyone you visit will be cordial and in a good mood that day.

I'll warn the faculty that you all will be coming around. These are the types of questions that you should ask

  1.  What courses do they teach (name, topic and number)
  2. What research interests do they pursue?
  3. What sort of research have their graduate students pursued over the years?
  4. What do they love about geography?
  5. What sort of jobs/internships do they know about for geography students?
  6. Maybe...what sort of thing interests them outside the the realm of academia...hobbies, travel, etc.

After you have interviewed your faculty member, post your answers in the Moodle Forum/New Forum area. I've made the first post, simply respond to that post entitled "Faculty Interview".

Once everyone has posted something, I'll put a quiz over the posted information to ensure everyone has read up on their faculty.

Some students get the most out of this department...others just get out of it whenever they can.

Don't be one of the latter.

Fill in your information and submit.  You may want to print and/or save a copy of the results page for your records .

When you click the button below, you will be directed to a web page displaying your answers. The instructor will get a copy of this email as well, but you may want to keep a copy for your records. If you are curious about the correct answers, please bring your questions to class or request that Dr. Graves email answer to you.
