Peer Nutrition Counseling/ Supervised Field Experience

OBJECTIVES

The student will:

  1. Practice the Ethics Code of the American Dietetic Association.
  2. Learn principles of interviewing and counseling and practice these in counseling situations.
  3. Demosntrate understanding of factors that influence food intake and health behavior including culture, socioeconomic psychological, physiological.
  4. Demonstrate principles of effective oral communication.
  5. Demonstrate effective written communication and documentation.
  6. Develop professional behavior and interact professionally with the Health Center staff.
  7. Develop and/or learn basic Internet computer skills.
  8. Dress code: casual professional.

Grading Policy

Course is graded credit/no credit. For credit in the class, the student must satisfactorily complete the following:

  1. Attend 14 classes and work 5 hours/week in health center activities.
  2. Complete all Student Health Center forms daily, including SOAP note.
  3. Prepare and co-present three nutrition lectures.
  4. Counsel a min. of 10 clients and document sessions.
  5. Prepare one newsletter article using Microsoft Word, document research of topic on WWW.
  6. Participate in two community outreach situations, i.e. AIDS Walk, Retreat, etc.
  7. Market the PNC Program to the CSUN students.
  8. Participate in Career Center interviewing and resume writing workshop. Email resume to instructor.
  9. Record & critique 2 counseling sessions - beginning of semester, & 1 at end.
  10. Complete class evaluation form.
  11. Exit interview with Dr. Grossman .
  12. Obtain a personal CSUN account on the Internet. Use this to communicate with instructor.
