Mission

The mission of the Office of Academic Services for Student-Athletes is to assist in planning the student-athlete’s educational and career goals. The office focuses on the individual needs of each student by providing academic advisement, eligibility information, and assistance in the interpretation of NCAA and University rules and regulations. The office also provides support services including tutoring, mentoring, "at-risk" programs, and other academic support services.

CSU Early Start Program

The California State Univesrity (CSU) system recently started requiring a summer program called "Early Start", where all first-time freshman who demonstrate the need for certain developmental Math or stretch-writing courses. The purpose of the course is to provide students the opportunity to better prepare for the Math and English courses they will take their first semesters, thereby improving their chances of fulfilling these requirements and completing a college degree. Any first-time freshman who is required to participate in this program will be notified, or will find out when they are regsitering for their Fall 2013 classes. Upper Division Writing Proficiency Examination:

Beginning Fall 2011, students must take the Upper Division Writing Proficiency Examination (UDWPE) no later than the semester in which they complete 75 units. Students who have not taken the UDWPE by the completion of 75 units will have a registration hold placed on their subsequent registration. Download the revised exam policy(.pdf).

Registration for the April 20th, 2013 test is now open (varying times). The deadline to register is April 12th, 2013. You may attempt the exam once you have 56 units, but if you know you will have completed 75 units this semester, or are over 75 units already, you will want to attempt the test this semester. You can now register for the tests online through the testing center at https://www.csun.edu/testing/reg/Login.php.

Please see your academic advisor regarding when you should attempt the test, if you are uncertain.
