About Us

TRIO is a set of eight federally funded college opportunity programs that motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds in pursuit of a college degree. CSUN sponsors two of these programs, Educational Talent Search (ETS) and Upward Bound.The ETS (grades 6-12) and Upward Bound (grades 9-12) programs at CSUN assist students in completing high school and pursuing a college degree. Our mission is to equip first generation or low-income families with up-to-date postsecondary and financial aid opportunities and enable students to attend the college or university of their choice.

Monica Jimenez provides leadership for TRIO federal college preparation programs. She has 23 years of experience overseeing various federal and state grant programs. Monica has worked with the Los Angeles Unified School District as well as charter schools throughout Los Angeles, managing expanded learning programs by working closely with school administrators, students and parents. Monica obtained her bachelor's degree in child development from CSUN.

 

Karen Carranza, Associate Director

Karen Carranza is the Associate Director of TRIO, federal outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. Over the last 10 years, she has worked to provide opportunities and access to higher education for K-12 students. Karen earned her bachelor's degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in Latin American Studies and is currently completing her master's degree in Public Administration at CSUN's Tseng College. As an educational professional, her mission is to continue assisting and supporting youth achieve their higher education goals, as well as, succeed post-graduation.
