Faculty Collective-Jennifer Romack

Jennifer RomackJennifer Romack is a Professor in the department of Kinesiology and a RIMI Tiered Mentor Program (TMP) Scholar. She has two research programs, both pertaining to the movement skills of young children. The first program focuses on contributing factors related to children’s risk for becoming overweight or obese. To this end, research questions are framed around social and environmental contexts associated with physical activity that preschoolers engage in during daily routines experienced at child care.  Through TMP, Dr. Romack and her students work with Dr. Stewart Trost using accelerometers and direct observation to assess children’s physical activity levels and types and the context in which physical activity occurs while at family child care.  The second program focuses on the effect that age and movement experiences have on the neuromuscular control strategies children use to land from various heights. Dr. Romack is a strong advocate of student engagement in their own learning and with the community. Since 2000, Dr. Romack has supervised over 1800 undergraduate kinesiology majors in service-learning projects designed to meet community-identified physical activity needs. She has served as CSUN’s Director of Community Service-Learning and received the 2006 Faculty Award for Visionary Community Service-Learning.
