Faculty Collective-Jennifer De Maio

Jennifer De MaioJennifer De Maio is a professor in the Department of Political Science. Her research interests fall into three broad areas: 1) Human Security and Public Health Policy in the African Diaspora; 2) Civil Wars and International Relations of Africa; and 3) Politics of Cultural Pluralism and Economic Development. In the field of public health, she has worked on the health implications of sex trafficking of Nigerian women to the United States and Italy and on the question of inequalities in the treatment of STDs and HIV/AIDS for African women living in the US. Dr. De Maio is currently researching how digital social media can be used to promote the prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases among African women living in Los Angeles. Students who participate in this project will assist with identifying social media content and analyzing focus group data. Students will be engaged in qualitative and quantitative analysis and will conduct interdisciplinary research that applies social science models to issues of public health and advocacy.
