CSUN Presentation Revisits the Vietnam War

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Sept. 10, 2007) — Cal State Northridge’s Center for Ethics and Values will shed light on an unforgettable period of American history in a presentation dedicated to the Vietnam War.

"A Look Back at the Vietnam War," which uses Tim O’Brien’s novel, "The Things They Carried," as a focal point for discussion, will be held Wednesday, Sept. 19, in the Oviatt Library Presentation Room from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

The program will include a timeline of events leading up to and following the Vietnam War presented by political science professor Virginia Lussier, along with individual recollections of personal involvement during the Vietnam era.

"This symposium on the Vietnam War brings together people with different personal recollections of the war and scholars who look back on the war from different perspectives," said philosophy professor James Kellenberger, one of the event’s organizers.

Among the morning’s discussion will be "The Vietnam War: the Political Scene," led by political science professor Tom Hogen-Esch, and "Cartoons of the Vietnam Era: What They Reveal," by English professor Charles Hatfield. War themes from O’Brien’s "The Things They Carried" will be presented by English professor Cheryl Spector.

Kellenberger will lead a question and answer session following the presentation.

The Center for Ethics and Values is home to a group of scholars and San Fernando Valley community leaders who share a common desire to examine, in an open forum, some of the ethical and value problems that affect society today. The center also supports research into ethical and social policy issues, the dissemination of that research into ethical academic colloquia and at public conferences, and serves as a consulting body to individuals and organizations requesting information or advice on ethical decisions and social policy.
