(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Sept. 17, 2007) — Like the state of California itself, California Native peoples are remarkably diverse with over 300 languages and distinct geographical centers shaping communities, traditions, ideologies and ceremonies.
California State University, Northridge Art Galleries will host "Sing Me Your Story, Dance Me Home: Art and Poetry from Native California," Oct. 12 through Nov. 17.
"With our focus on a broad range of contemporary and international art in its many forms, we are very pleased to have this opportunity to exhibit the art and poetry of contemporary Native American artists from California," said Michelle Giacopuzzi, the gallery’s exhibitions coordinator.
The show includes Native American stories, songs, and dance presented as poetry, painting, basketry, jewelry, printmaking, photography and sculpture. Along with the artifacts, themes of family history, identity, self-acceptance, cultural traditions, racism, and socioeconomics will be explored.
"As greater awareness grows in California of the history and contributions of indigenous cultures, it is particularly important to herald the accomplishments in the creative arts, particularly given how integral they are to the daily life of the many tribes native to California," Giacopuzzi said.
A reception, sponsored by the Arts Council for CSUN, will be held opening day, Friday, Oct. 12 from 7 to 9 p.m. On Monday, Oct. 15, a gallery talk will begin at 10 a.m.
Free and open to the public, the exhibit will be held in the Main Gallery located on N. University Drive.
CSUN”s Art Galleries are open Monday through Saturday, from 12 to 4 p.m. and Thur., 12 to 8 p.m. Parking is $4 and available in Lots D6 and E6 located off Halsted Street.
