San Simon: Manifestations of a Guatemalan Folk Saint

This exhibition consists of figures, altars, masks and images of San Simon/Maximón, a revered folk saint of Guatemala, who is treated with great deference for his abilities to bestow blessings as well as grave misfortune. Curated by Peri M. Klemm and Bill Mercer with students from Exhibition Design (Art 342/542), this show features the renowned collection of Jim and Jeanne Pieper and will present various depictions and guises of this unique syncretic folk saint. The exhibition opening will coincide with San Simon's feast day when he appears in processions and his altars are renewed with offerings of tobacco, alcohol, incense, clothing, money, candles, and food.
Eighteenth Annual High School Invitational exhibition

In it's 18th year, the CSUN Art Galleries is hosting its Annual High School Art Invitational from January 12 through 31, 2015. The exhibition showcases work made by students from nearly 40 public and private high schools in the San Fernando Valley. Selected by members of each school's art faculty, each school may invite up to six students to participate by submitting one work each. Only works from the spring and fall, 2014 terms are eligible. The exhibition features over 200 works and encompasses a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, ceramics, graphic design, illustration, photograph and animation. The lively and ever popular artist's reception will be held on Friday, January 30 from 7-9pm.

Sixth Annual High School Teachers Art Exhibition
January 12 – 31, 2015
For the sixth year in a row, we will be inviting high school teachers this year to have artwork displayed during the run of our 18th Annual High School Student Art Invitational. As with last year, the 5th Annual High School Teacher Art Invitational will be on view in the West Gallery, which is off the Main Gallery lobby.
