CSUN Experts: The Science Behind the Masks

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently recommended people wear cloth face coverings in public settings. The virus that causes COVID-19 is known to spread from droplets in the air which come from an infected person who sneezes, coughs, breathes or talks. In the days following this recommendation, people have begun making their own masks. Suggestions and styles vary. Wouldn't it be helpful to know what makes some masks work better than others? CSUN Prepared ‘Disease Detective’ for the Fight Against COVID-19

In simple terms, CSUN alumnus Raul Figueroa-Valenzuela describes himself as a disease detective. Figueroa-Valenzuela M.P.H. ’18 (Public Health-Applied Epidemiology) is an epidemiology analyst for the LA County Department of Public Health. Beginning in January, with reports of growing cases of a novel coronavirus out of Wuhan, China, Figueroa-Valenzuela and a team of epidemiologists began to track people down who had traveled from the virus hotspots abroad into LA County, tell them to quarantine, and follow their progress. Epidemiologist and CSUN Alumna Sheds Light on COVID-19

At a moment when a vaccine against the COVID-19 virus is on the distant horizon, CSUN Today reached out to alumna Dr. Laurie Ann Shaker-Irwin ’87 (Health Sciences), a leader in the field of epidemiology.  We asked her to share her insights on the COVID-19 pandemic and when we might see a cure.  Shaker-Irwin's specialty is stem cell research and getting clinical trials up and running. She played a key role in speeding up the testing and approvals for important HIV drug treatments.
