Open Positions

Student Government is comprised of student leaders who seek to provide the ultimate college experience and uphold the mission and vision of Associated Students. Student leaders encourage shared governance, student advocacy and collaboration with other campus and community entities.

Student Government also hosts a variety of student activities, including events with guest speakers, community outreach efforts and open forums. Associated Students is the official seat of student governance for the campus; student leaders are elected every spring semester.

The following qualifications apply to the following positions within Associated Students at CSU Northridge: President, Vice President, Senators, Attorney General, Finance (all positions), All Cabinet positions, Elections Committee members, Executive Assistant:

  • Must earn a 2.5 undergraduate or 3.0 graduate GPA in the semester prior to the appointment.
  • Must have a minimum cumulative CSUN GPA of 2.5 for undergraduates; 3.0 for graduates at the time of applying.
  • Must be a student in good standing (not on academic or disciplinary probation), and be a regular member of the Associated Students (must be enrolled in the regular university and pay AS fees)

Senators, Attorney General and all Cabinet members must be enrolled in a minimum of nine (9) units undergraduate, or four (4) units graduate during their candidacy and while in office, except when in their last semester before graduation when they may enroll in the minimum number of units required for graduation. Candidates for any of these offices may not be on disciplinary probation.

Senate meetings are only mandatory for the Chief of Staff, Chair of Finance, and Attorney General

AS Student Leader Application 2023-2024

Members of the senate develop skills in parliamentary procedure, decision making, critical analysis, goal setting, communication, group processing and multiculturalism. Serving on the senate enables students to apply what they learn in the classroom to real-life situations as they gain a more thorough understanding of fiscal issues, personnel matters, marketing and public relations.

Senate members have the opportunity to:

  • Serve as one of the 24 students representing a student body of more than 40,000
  • Gain valuable leadership experience
  • Initiate and approve policy and legislation
  • Preside over a multimillion dollar operating budget
  • Serve on committees that affect change on campus
  • Network with people from various backgrounds
  • Work with faculty and campus administrators
  • Must attend weekly senate meetings on Mondays from 9:00am - 12:00pm
  • Must attend weekly committee meeting, either Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday from 5:00pm - 6:00pm

The attorney general serves as a member of the president’s cabinet and an ex officio member of the AS Senate. Duties include but are not limited to the following.

  • Attends weekly cabinet meetings
  • Implements the use of parliamentary procedure in the AS Senate
  • Warns and dismisses senators for excessive absences
  • oversees the AS Legislation Log and keeps it up to date on the website
  • Keeps and codifies the codes passed by AS Senate
  • Writes the script for and coordinates the weekly “Senate in a Minute” series, which requires interpreting the language in the AS bylaws, policies and codes
  • Attends campus events and meetings as determined by the AS president and vice president
  • Must attend weekly senate meetings on Mondays from 9 am - 12 noon

The chief of staff serves as a member of the president’s cabinet and as primary liaison between the AS president and vice president, and other executive cabinet members. Duties include but are not limited to the following.

  • Oversees the daily operations of the President's Cabinet
  • Plans events including AS President's Day celebration, AS Awareness Month, and AS High School Conference
  • Attends weekly Senate meetings and reports on the progress of cabinet members
  • Serves as the chair of weekly cabinet meetings on Wednesdays from 4 to 5 pm and ensures proper records of proceedings are kept
  • Develops an achievement plan with periodic benchmarks to be met by each cabinet member
  • Attends committee and board meetings at the discretion of the president and vice president
  • Plans and organizes cabinet retreat
  • Evaluates cabinet progress, benchmarks and attainability of goals
  • Must attend weekly senate meetings on Mondays from 9 am - 12 noon

 

The chief justice serves as a member of the president’s cabinet and is responsible for ensuring that AS actions, policies and procedures are in alignment with the terms and spirit of the AS Constitution. Duties include but are not limited to the following.

  • Attends weekly cabinet meetings
  • Remains knowledgeable of the AS Constitution, codes and policies
  • Serves as the chair of weekly judicial court meetings
  • Prepares and distributes agendas of judicial court meetings and proceedings
  • Ensures that majority and, if applicable, minority-dissenting opinions are written and published for distribution
  • Presents pending constitutions for approval and addresses questions from senators related to those constitutions
  • Remains knowledgeable of all judicial court proceedings as outlined in the AS code on judicial court

An Associate Justice assists the Chief Justice in his/her duties. A Judicial Court Committee Member's duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Participate fully in all related Judicial Court meetings and hearings.
  • Write and sign opinions.

The chair of elections serves as a member of the president’s cabinet and administers the AS elections process to ensure all election publicity and campaigning is carried out according to the rules, regulations, procedures and policies of AS and the university. Duties include but are not limited to the following.

  • Serves as chair of elections for the Elections Committee meetings
  • Recruits, trains and evaluates all paid elections employees, and  processes payroll documents
  • Prepares all content for the online voting system, including ballot preparation, candidate statements and pictures, email alerts and requests for voter information
  • Arranges for preparation of all election materials, including packets and fliers
  • Recruits candidates to run for office through creative and innovative marketing and publicity
  • Presides over all complaints regarding election conduct, violations of the AS Elections Code, and applicable university policies and procedures
  • Maintains documentation of all election committee agendas and minutes, including those that address election irregularities
  • Supervises voting and balloting during election days
  • Arranges for the secure handling of election materials, including confidential information
  • Arranges, publicizes and mediates all press conferences and presidential debates
  • Oversees the purchase, management and storage of all election-related supplies
  • Presides over mandatory candidate orientation meetings
  • Presides over mandatory street team training
  • Submits election summary report to the senate
  • Submits an election evaluation report to the senate
  • Attends campus events and meetings as determined by the AS president and vice president

The assistant chair of elections assists the chair of elections in carrying out his or her duties. Duties include but are not limited to the following.

  • Prepares and distributes agenda and minutes of all Elections Committee meetings and hearings
  • Serves as the chair of meetings when the chair of elections is unable to attend regular meetings or hearings
  • Maintains a historical archive of elections committee documents, election results and marketing plans

  • Must be able to attend external affairs committee meetings Wed from 5 - 6 pm
  • Serves as the chair of Lobby Corps meetings
  • Prepares and distributes Lobby Corps meeting agendas  
  • Trains Lobby Corps members
  • Travels to California State University campuses one weekend per month with the California State Student Association (CSSA) to discuss legislation and issues pertaining to the entire California State University  system
  • Demonstrates knowledge of legislative news affecting CSUN
  • Finds ways to further advocacy efforts by undertaking studies, conducting surveys, researching, writing letters, initiating Mailgram campaigns, etc.
  • Organizes voter registration drives and political awareness events
  • Establishes and maintains working relationships with government bodies and officials, including the CSUN Government Affairs director, the Legislative Aides Association, CSU Board of Trustees, the governor, state legislators, and other state entities and associations.
  • Attends campus events and meetings as determined by the AS president and vice president

The chair of finance serves as a member of the president’s cabinet and is the primary individual that aids students, departments and other campus entities in raising awareness about the AS budget and funding process. Duties include but are not limited to the following.

  • Attends weekly cabinet meetings
  • Demonstrates abundant knowledge regarding the six different AS funding accounts — assigned contingency, unassigned contingency, academically related reserves account, clubs and organizations travel, capital improvement and The University Corporation
  • Serves as the chair of weekly finance meetings and prepares agendas
  • Works closely with the AS controller and fellow accounting staff
  • Leads the annual budget process
  • Innovatively spreads on-campus awareness of funding outlets
  • Leads AS finance information sessions at the Club and Org Annual Recognition Conference
  • Serves on the Instructionally Related Activities Board
  • Serves on the Student Fee Advisory Committee
  • Serves on the University Planning Budget Group
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the philosophy governing the evaluation of budget requests as outlined in the AS Finance Committee Code
  • Attends campus events and meetings as determined by the AS president and vice president

The assistant chair of finance assists the chair of finance in carrying out his or her duties. Duties include but are not limited to the following.

  • Attends weekly finance meetings
  • Prepares minutes of weekly meetings and maintains documentation of finance committee information
  • Demonstrates abundant knowledge regarding the six different AS funding accounts — assigned contingency, unassigned contingency, academically related reserves account, clubs and organizations travel, capital improvement and The University Corporation
  • Assists with innovatively spreading on-campus awareness of funding outlets

The chair of personnel serves as a member of the president’s cabinet and is an ex officio member of the AS Personnel Board. Duties include but are not limited to the following.

  • Attends weekly cabinet meetings
  • Recruits qualified applicants for chair, senate and committee seats as vacancies occur
  • Conducts interviews for qualified applicants
  • Facilitates the process of AS Member of the Month
  • Attends campus events and meetings as determined by the AS president and vice president

Under the direction of the AS President and with advisement from the Manager for Student Leadership and Productions and AS Executive Director, the Chair of Diversity Equity and Inclusion will:

  • Oversee the Diversity and Inclusion Committee, including develop and post agendas, take and distribute minutes of all members.
  • Participate as a member of the AS President’s Cabinet, and provide reports and updates as requested.
  • Perform the responsibilities of the job as outlined in the AS Code on the Chair of Diversity and Inclusion.
  • Participate in tabling and other duties as assigned.
  • Serve on Boards and Committees as assigned.

An Elections Committee Member assists the Chair of Elections in his/her duties. An election committee member’s duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • The recruitment of students to run for office in the AS elections
  • The recruitment of students to vote in AS elections
  • The administration of a secure elections process

A Finance Committee Member assists the Chair of Finance in his/her duties. A Finance committee member’s duties include, but are not limited to the following

  • Must attend Finance Committee meetings on Mondays from 1 PM – 4 PM
  • Preparing the annual budget as prescribed by the Code of Finance
  • Making recommendations on special budget requests during the fiscal year
  • Take part in budget deliberations and submission of recommendations on the budget allocations to the AS President

AS student leaders who will act as ambassadors for all clubs and organizations on campus. They will act as representatives for various councils, athletics, and activities throughout CSUN.

The Clubs & Orgs Ambassador Student team's purpose is to act as a resource for the clubs and organizations on campus. Assist with AS programs, promotion of athletics, and the building of a collaborative and supportive relationship with AS student leadership.

  • Assist in being a resource between AS and the Clubs & Organizations on campus
  • Be assigned a set of clubs and organizations to directly contact and have relations
  • Assist in updating the monthly calendar of clubs and orgs activities
  • Be an advocate for designated clubs
  • Be a rep for your clubs/orgs
  • Organized and able to assist in planning
  • Participate in outreach to clubs
  • Attend designated clubs and orgs meetings or events
  • Be available as a rep for boards or committees

  • Provide help in designing, implementing, hosting and evaluating the programs assigned to the committee.
  • Under the guidance of the Chair, engage in discussions about ways AS could increase its effectiveness in dealing with issues of diversity and inclusion, which the Chair will bring to the President.
  • Help develop the list of AS and campus resources, as well as innovative and effective ways to share/publicize/distribute that info.
  • Participate in AS programming, and outreach related to diversity and inclusion issues.

Under the direction of the AS President and with advisement from the Manager for Student Leadership, the Executive Assistant to the President (or Vice President) will:

  • Provide clerical support to the President/Vice President, which may include but not be limited to: responding to emails, filing, preparing materials for presentations or meetings, and reconciling travel reports with the President.
  • Manage the President/VP’s calendar
  • Work on special projects that are outside the scope of other Cabinet positions.
