The Institute has organized a leadership team on veterans’ initiatives that has been working to enhance resources, increase knowledge, and develop collaborative networks in support of veterans at Cal State Northridge. In April 2011, the team collaborated with the Center for Innovative & Engaged Learning Opportunities (CIELO) to present a faculty development conference, “‘Coming Home’ to CSUN: Teaching and Learning with Veterans”—a first step in building a community focused on veteran student success and increasing awareness of veteran student experiences in the classroom. The conference included a best practices discussion on pedagogical strategies for working with veterans and a presentation by Institute faculty affiliates Drs. Amy Levin and Nathan Durdella on the findings of the CSUN Student Veterans Needs Assessment Study.
Another Veterans project on campus is the Veterans Theatre Project. Under the direction of Doug Kaback, historical event information is being gathered to create a new drama that will serve as a forum to address issues in support of student veterans. The Veterans Theatre Project is currently open for student enrollment for spring 2014. This course examines socially engaged performance techniques that focus on the subject of the U.S. veteran re-entering society after military service. Civic engagement will involve CSUN students leading theatre activities and presentations with several community partners on and off campus.
