Native American Day Observance

The following message was posted on the front page of the university website on Sept. 23, 2015:

Native American Day Observance

In 2014, the State of California, with the approval of the Governor, established the fourth Friday in September as Native American Day, a state holiday. This year, Native American Day will be celebrated on September 25, 2015. While the amendment does not involve the closure of state and local public offices, individuals, communities and public institutions are encouraged to use the day as an opportunity to honor the culture, contributions and resilience of Native Americans.

In conjunction with the holiday, the American Indian Studies Program and the American Indian Student Association are partnering with the Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians to host an educational event on September 24 and 25, for visiting elementary school children from the community. We look forward to welcoming these students to celebrate Native American culture and history, and I encourage everyone in the campus community to take some time during the day to remember the legacy and contributions of the Native American community.
