BA and Single Subject Preliminary Credential in History-Social Science

BA and Single Subject Preliminary Credential in History-Social Science

Students interested in pursuing a teaching career as middle school or high school history teachers are welcome to apply to the Four-Year Integrated (FYI) History Subject Matter Program or the Junior-Year Integrated (JYI) History Subject Matter Programs. These programs make it possible for a student to earn both a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and a Single Subject History-Social Science Preliminary Credential.

In the FYI/JYI programs students work towards their BA in History and Preliminary Credential in History-Social Science at the same time. FYI and JYI integrate History subject matter coursework, GE requirements, and the coursework included in professional preparation. FYI students can complete the program in four or five years and JYI students can complete the program in two or three years, depending on their transferred credits

Admission into programs leading to licensure and credentialing does not guarantee that students will obtain a license or credential. Licensure and credentialing requirements are set by agencies that are not controlled by or affiliated with the CSU, and requirements can change at any time. For example, licensure or credentialing requirements can include evidence of the right to work in the United States (e.g., Social Security number or taxpayer identification number) or successfully passing a criminal background check. Students are responsible for determining whether they can meet licensure or credentialing requirements. The CSU will not refund tuition, fees or any associated costs to students who determine subsequent to admission that they cannot meet licensure or credentialing requirements. Information concerning licensure and credentialing requirements is available from the department.

It is imperative that students follow the course sequence as stipulated on the CSUN catalogue (available Fall 2022). There are additional requirements that students should fulfill in order to be eligible for the program such as a minimum GPA, demonstration of basic skills and subject matter competence, and early field experience. Please consult with the History Department’s SSSMP advisor, undergraduate coordinator, or Dr. Patricia Juarez-Dappe if you have any questions about these programs.

The sequence of courses will be posted in the Fall 2022 version of the CSUN catalogue.
