Crest 2017 Information

Welcome

If you are a researcher, engineer, consultant or policy-maker in the field of Renewable Energy and Advanced Energy Storage Technology, you are invited to participate in this 3rd regional conference at California State University, Northridge, to exchange innovative ideas and visions of the future of a “Greener” California.

This one day conference, sponsored by NSF and IEEE, and hosted by the CSUN College of Engineering and Computer Science, has been designed to bring together universities, industries, R & D laboratories & Government agencies to propel Renewable Energy and Advanced Energy Storage Technology into the future. It will feature invited speakers, poster presentations, and a tour of the Campus renewable energy facilities, thus providing a unique opportunity for communication and collaboration between academia and industry.

Call for Posters

Conference Topics: Solar Energy, Wind Energy, Geothermal Energy, Energy Storage, Frequency Regulation, Risk Management. Posters related to other areas of renewable energy will also be considered for presentation.

Poster Preparation

Posters can be prepared on ordinary A4, A5, or 8 1/2" x 11" size paper. Larger sheets may also be used. All lettering and diagrams should be large enough to be read from a minimum of 2 meters (6 feet). Authors are urged to use colors, symbols and schemes to improve clarity.

Suggested lettering size is 3 cm (1-1/4") for the poster title and 2 cm (3/4") for names and addresses of authors and section headings, such as ABSTRACT, INTRODUCTION METHODS, RESULTS, DISCUSSION AND SUMMARY.

Dante Acosta

Keynote Speaker: Assemblyman Dante Acosta, California 38th Assembly District

Dante Acosta was elected in 2016 to represent California’s 38th Assembly District. Before joining the Assembly, Dante served as Mayor Pro Tem on the Santa Clarita City Council. In the private sector, he worked as the General Sales Manager of a car dealership, and in a number of senior leadership positions in the finance industry as well as volunteering for several worthwhile charities. He attended California State University, Northridge, and the University of Phoenix. Dante is very supportive of both veterans and active duty military. His eldest son, Rudy Acosta an Army Specialist, was killed in action in Afghanistan. Dante and his wife Carolyn live in Santa Clarita, where they raised their three children.

 

 

 

 

Alison Brown

Alison Brown, Flux Energy Systems

Alison Brown, P.E. has over 10 years of experience in renewable energy. She has worked on a wide variety of alternative energy projects including residential solar and battery projects, smart grid pilot programs, commercial fuel cells and utility scale photovoltaic installations. She founded Flux Energy Systems to improve the reliability of alternative engineering infrastructure. Improving the designs and incorporating integrity into every project decision will make the alternative energy industry durable and more competitive with the conventional power grid. Alison holds a B.A. in Physics from Middlebury College and a M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado, Boulder. She was a recipient of the 2009 Transatlantic Renewable Energy Fellowship.

 

 

 

 

Rajat ChakrabortiDr. Rajat Chakraborti, Project Engineer, ch2m 

Dr. Rajat Chakraborti is a Civil Engineer and working for CH2M since 2005. Dr. Chakraborti received Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the State University of New York, Buffalo, New York in 2004. His expertise includes constructed wetlands treatment of wastewater effluent for beneficial reuse. He has been working on the use of wetlands for treating pollutants as a best management practice. His expertise also includes climate change impact analysis for waterbodies, water resources and ecosystem management, asset management, distribution system and water quality analyses for surface waters. Dr. Chakraborti performed studies on coagulation for engineered processes including pre-treatment of wetlands. Dr. Chakraborti has published many papers in the peer-reviewed journals and presented at the nationally and internationally acclaimed conferences.

 

 

 

 

Alan FuchsDr. Alan Fuchs, Director of the California Energy Research Center, CSU Bakersfield

Dr. Alan Fuchs is Director of the California Energy Research Center and CSU Bakersfield. The center focuses on oil and gas, solar, wind and bioenergy. Fuchs was Chair of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno from 2010-2015 and faculty since 1998. He has 12 years of industrial experience in membrane synthesis and characterization.

 

 

 

 

 

Hossein Akhavan-HejaziDr. Seyed Hossein Akhavan-Hejazi, University of California, Riverside 

Hossein Akhavan-Hejazi: Assistant Research Faculty at Winston Chung Global Energy Center, College of Engineering, UCR. Nine years of experience in power systems and smart grids, with focus on renewable technologies, energy storage, energy efficiency and demand response. He was a post-doctoral researcher at UC San Diego and UCR in 2016-17. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from UCR. His research interests include optimization and stochastic analysis in electric power systems, power system operations and market analysis, operation management and modeling of energy storage systems, and big data applications in power systems.

 

 

 

 

Ivor JohnDr. Ivor John

For over 35 years, Ivor has worked on a wide range of environmental, safety and risk management services for the oil and gas industry, chemicals and petrochemicals, power generation, utilities, pipeline operations, and many other sectors. He specialize in GHG emissions measurement and verification, and has verified more than 500 million tonnes of GHG emissions in the last 15 years. He has worked as an employee and as a consultant in many countries including UK, USA, Canada, Taiwan, China, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Colombia and the Virgin islands. As a local resident of Santa Barbara for 30 years, Ivor served on a number of non-profit and community boards, and he is actively engage on environmental and climate issues. His current focus is on hydrogen as a potential fuel for the future.

 

 

 

 

Larent PilonDr. Laurent Pilon, Professor, MAE, UCLA

Laurent Pilon is Director of the INFEWS UCLA program funded by the National Science Foundation. He received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University in 2002. He then joined the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at UCLA where he is now Professor. His research group is engaged in a wide range of interdisciplinary research projects at the intersection between interfacial and transport phenomena, material science, and biology for sustainable energy conversion, storage, and efficiency technologies. He is the recipient of the CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation, the 2008 Bergles-Rohsenow Young Investigator Award in Heat Transfer from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He is a Fellow of ASME and a Senior Member of SPIE.

 

 

 

 

Boykin Witherspoon IIIBoykin Witherspoon III, CSU Water Resources and Policy Initiatives

Mr. Witherspoon’s experience includes the administration of all aspects of the management for the CSU Water Resources and Policy Initiatives (WRPI) including: strategic planning and budgeting; promotion with community, universities, and industry; program management; development and oversight of contracts and grants; hiring and supervision of staff; and training and publications efforts. Additionally, Mr. Witherspoon is a focused problem solver with international project management experience developing Geographic Information System (GIS) applications and software for sustainable landscape architectural planning and design. Mr. Witherspoon’s professional experience includes managing interdisciplinary teams of designers, scientists, and software developers creating innovative and sustainable land use and land planning solutions with an emphasis on programmatic suitability and capability analysis. Mr. Witherspoon is dedicated to ingraining GIS and geographic information science into the teaching, legal, and regulatory frameworks that direct development and use of the Earth’s resources.

In order to receive and process payments in a timely manner, all fees must be postmarked by the November 10th deadline.  Fees not sent in by November 10th should be held and presented at the time of check in on the day of event.

Parking

CREST 2017 attendees may opt to utilize the G3 parking structure, which is located closest to the University Student Union, Grand Salon.  A map with directions to the G3 parking structure can be found here: CREST 2017 Parking Map

General Parking Information:
Guest parking permits will allow you to park in any guest, staff, faculty, or student space on campus.  The permit is not valid in metered parking (which make parking permits void, and require payment), disabled parking spaces (which require an ADA placard in addition to the parking permit), Special Use spaces, Reserved spaces, State Vehicle spaces, grass areas, or red curbed areas.
 
Parking permits are required at all times in all areas of campus. Parking permits must be properly displayed to avoid parking citations. To be valid, the parking permit must be affixed to the vehicle front inside windshield, lower corner, passenger side, while parked at CSUN.  The entire permit must be visible including serial number and security features.
