RTM 251 - News Flash - Bulletin

May 2, 2007

Okay - some times things don't happen according to plan.  The student review of student projects I was going to post on-line is not working out.  So, that assignment is now being cancelled.  Sorry! (Oh, I think I hear cheers coming from my computer :).   The projects remaining will be those already outlined on the assignments page:  quizzes, journal on field experience, and the environmental ethic statement.

Previous news releases: Please check to make sure you are up-to-date.

Fun Life Quotes:

When all the dangerous cliffs are fenced off, all the trees that might fall on people are cut down, all of the insects that bite are poisoned... and all of the grizzlies are dead because they are occasionally dangerous, the wilderness will not be made safe. Rather, the safety will have destroyed the wilderness."

--R. Yorke Edwards (Canadian environmentalist)

Previous news items are listed below from most recent to least recent.

April 26, 2007

  • Lecture 5 is finally up in final form and the quiz 5 is now ready.  Remember that Quizzes 4-6 must be completed by May 16, 2007.
  • The brief review of student projects will be due May 16 and the reports will be posted by next Monday.  Details to follow.

April 9, 2007

Welcome back from spring break.  Here are a few news items and reminders.

  • The final set of lectures are now posted.  Reviewing the material and taking the appropriate quiz (# 4, 5, 6) are your responsibility between now and May 16th.
  • Reminder to check your assignments page to make sure your other projects are submitted as well - the next looming deadline is April 19th for the paper.
  • Reminder that there is a student to student question/ dialogue function posted at the WebCT page that has seen limited use.  Use the resource if it would be helpful to you.
  • Students can now check grades on specific assignments through the WebCT site for the course.  You can email me with any grade questions.  Refer to your assignments page for the weighted value of those specific grade's contribution toward your final grade.  Quiz #3 saw a noticeable dip in overall class performance with a mean of 69% on raw scores.  Not being sure exactly what was going on, I decided to provide a class curve of 8 points so your posted grade reflects that curve.

Lectures 4 and 6 are now posted along with their respective quizzes.  Lecture 5 is being updated and will appear this week as well.  I am working on grading for the class and will let you know by email when your current grade status is updated.

March 1, 2006

Lecture 3 and Quiz 3 are now posted on the assignments page.  Remember that Quiz 1-3 need to be submitted by March 21.

Now that enrollment seems to have balanced out for the class (quite a few people drop and add on line classes the first three weeks of the semester),  I will be a bit more regular in posting items and keeping the course active.  Most of you have submitted required assignments at this point which is a good thing.  Some have asked for the policy on late assignments, the answer is on the bottom of the assignments page.

Lecture 2 and its Quiz are now accessible and I will post Lecture 3 next week.  You can move through the first set of three lectures at your own pace but just make sure they are all done by the mid semester deadline.

I'm posting this and then will be off to the mountains for the weekend for the RTM 151C class in Winter Mountaineering.  For those with some interest in the outdoors - check out our 151 series of classes for next semester.

Speaking of grades - be sure to check the requirements for 'electronic submission of assignments' to maximize your grades on assignments.  Sounds picky I know but needing to rename 50 e-papers to keep them straight becomes unnecessarily time consuming.

Oh yeah -  I've been asked about grades for material submitted - once a group of grades is posted I will let you know via one of these bulletins and/or email that grades are posted.
