(1) Internet Hard Drive: A number of companies such as xdrive.com or idisk offer free internet hard drives on which you can store your files. This is particularly helpful if you wish to work on files in the lab, at work, and at home, and do not want to bring disks or worry about disk compatibility.

(2) Citation of Information from the Internet:
To cite files available for viewing/downloading via the World Wide Web by means of Netscape, Explorer , or other Web browsers, it is best to provide the following information.

  • the author's name (if known)
  • the full title of the document in quotation marks
  • the title of the complete work if applicable in italics
  • the date of publication or last revision (if available)
  • the full http address (URL) enclosed within angle brackets
  • the date of visit in parentheses

MLA format: Last name of author, First name of author. "Title of Page," in Website Name. <url> (access date)

Sample: Herr, Norman. "Department of Secondary Education," in California State University, Northridge. <http://www.csun.edu/~sch_educ/sed/sed.html> (accessed 1 January 2000).

Check out the APA citation guidelines for a variety fiting a variety of media sources. Please note that APA guidelines differ from MLA guidelines.

(3) Advanced Searching: Boolean Searches: A method of searching text based on Boolean operators: an "and" operator between two words or other values (for example, "university AND northidge") means one is searching for documents containing both of the words or values. An "or" operator between two words or other values (e.g. "university OR northridge") means one is searching for documents containing either of the words. The term "Boolean" comes from George Boole, a 19th-century mathematician generally credited with inventing modern-day mathematical logic. AltaVista has extensive Boolean Search capabilities. These are summarized on their help page. The following table is from that page.(see searching and wildcards for more information)

Searching the Web: When trying to get specific information, it is best to use a search engine such as AltaVista with advanced search features such as Boolean Querys. In addition, to Boolean logic, AltaVista offers the following advanced search options which are sometimes not included on their own help page. (see searching and wildcards for more information) (See also Boolean Search and wildcards)

Keyword Symbol Action (Boolean Operators)
AND & Finds only documents containing all of the specified words or phrases. Mary AND lamb finds documents with both the word Mary and the word lamb.
OR | Finds documents containing at least one of the specified words or phrases. Mary OR lamb finds documents containing either Mary or lamb. The found documents could contain both, but do not have to.
NOT ! Excludes documents containing the specified word or phrase. Mary AND NOT lamb finds documents with Mary but not containing lamb. NOT cannot stand alone--use it with another operator, like AND. For example, AltaVista does not accept Mary NOT lamb; instead, specify Mary AND NOT lamb.
NEAR ~ Finds documents containing both specified words or phrases within 10 words of each other. Mary NEAR lamb would find the nursery rhyme, but likely not religious or Christmas-related documents.
Keyword Function
anchor:text Finds pages that contain the specified word or phrase in the text of a hyperlink. anchor:"Click here to visit AltaVista" would find pages with "Click here to visit AltaVista" as a link.
applet:class Finds pages that contain a specified Java applet. Use applet:morph to find pages using applets called morph.
domain:domainname Finds pages within the specified domain. Use domain:de to find pages from Germany, or use domain:org to find pages from organizations.
host:name Finds pages on a specific computer. The search host:altavista.digital.com would find pages on the AltaVista computer, and host:dilbert.unitedmedia.com would find pages on the computer called dilbert at unitedmedia.com.
image:filename Finds pages with images having a specific filename. Use image:elvis to find pages with images called elvis.
link:URLtext Finds pages with a link to a page with the specified URL text. Use link:altavista.digital.com to find all pages linking to AltaVista.
text:text Finds pages that contain the specified text in any part of the page other than an image tag, link, or URL. The search text:cow9 would find all pages with the term cow9 in them.
title:text Finds pages that contain the specified word or phrase in the page title (which appears in the title bar of most browsers). The search title:Elvis would find pages with Elvis in the title.
url:text Finds pages with a specific word or phrase in the URL. Use url:altavista to find all pages on all servers that have the word altavista in the host name, path, or filename--the complete URL, in other words.

(4) Outlining: Develop an outline using an automatic outlining program such as that found in Microsoft Word. Include printouts of the outline in expanded, collapsed, and numbered format . (Suggested expanded length: 1 page or more.) For additional help, you may wish to access the Microsoft Support Line.

Project: Attach your Word Outline to your website as a downloadable .doc file. (When saving your Word outline, make certain that it has a .doc file extension.) Save it in the same directory as the web page from which it will be downloaded. When referring to the outline from your web page, link using the exact name of the file. When loaded correctly your file should download like this sample outline on chemistry.

(5) Presentation Software: Using presentation software, create a presentation with at least 10 slides. The slide show should teach or introduce a concept or topic related to the theme of your website. You may wish to refer to Tips and Frequently Asked Questions PowerPoint from BitBetter Corporation for more information on PowerPoint, or access the Microsoft Support Line. You may also wish to read the step by step instructions below.

Sample files for in-class project (constructing a PowerPoint Presentation on the Solar System)

Source of Outline: Solar System Outline
Graphics Files: Project Web page; NinePlanets; NASA Image Exchange; AltaVista Image Search
Finished: PowerPoint Presentation

  • develop a slide show from an MS Word outlined document. (Download detailed instructions as a Microsoft Word Outline)
  • apply and edit background style to slide show
  • alter backgrounds colors of slides in a show
  • import graphics into foreground and background, keeping file size as small (compressed) as possible.
  • group graphics and text
  • add a movie (Quicktime or AVI): Soures of movies: NASA Image Exchange; AltaVista Image Search
  • format text for optimal viewing
  • add drawn details in PowerPoint
  • add animation in PowerPoint
  • apply transition effects to slides
  • apply progressive disclosure to slide items
  • add data table from Word
  • develop an automatic slide presentation with appropriate timings.

Project: Attach your PowerPoint slide show to your website as a downloadable .ppt file. (When saving your PowerPoint presentation, make certain that it has a .ppt file extension.) Save it in the same directory as the web page from which it will be downloaded. When referring to the PowerPoint presentation from your web page, link using the exact name of the file. When loaded correctly your file should download like this sample PowerPoint Presentation on the Solar System. Note, if you are inserting large audio or video files to your presentation, they may not distribute well on the web. This is because they do not become part of the PowerPoint file, but are simply referenced from the file, and are downloaded separately. The best thing to do is to put all supporting files in the same folder as the PowerPoint presentation, and then stuff or zip the folder to compress it.
