554 Syllabus
Teaching Hours
This course allows the teacher candidate a gradual transition from observation to student teaching.
In a regular semester, assuming a 16-20 week track or semester, SED 554 students are expected to work with a master teacher for one (1) period daily, for a full semester, assuming responsibilities for teaching on or about the 6th week of class, or about 1/3 of the way into the semester.
School Site and Seminar Participation
Candidates are expected to attend their school sites daily and have no absences. Absences exceeding ten (10) school days for illness or family emergency automatically withdraw the candidate from
SED 554. It is the candidate’s responsibility to notify both the university supervisor and the master teacher in the rare case of an absence. If a university supervisor makes a visit and the candidate is not on site, a note of this shall be made on the candidate’s Progress Report. In the event of an absence, the candidate is also responsible for leaving lesson plans for the one class (s)he teaches once (s)he has assumed responsibility for that class. The teacher candidate shall observe the school site’s calendar. That is, the candidate must teach until the end of the school site’s session, even if that comes after CSUN’s semester end date.Candidates are expected to fully participate in the seminar.
Candidate Evaluation and Grading
All candidates are enrolled in SED 554 on a Credit - No Credit basis. Candidates must receive a passing score from the university supervisor, master teacher, and the seminar, to receive a grade of Credit. A passing grade is achieved by completion of all assignments, a grade of at least Satisfactory on all portions of the 554 Teaching Event, and regular participation in the seminar.
University Supervisor and Master Teacher
Provide support to the candidates in the field during the semester. Visits by the University Supervisor typically occur as follows:
Visit 1 - Initial conference with Candidate and Master Teacher
Visit 2 - during Individual Tutoring or Mini-Lessons
Visits 3 and 4 – during Student Teaching.
The university supervisor consults with the master teacher on the progress of the candidate, including attendance, instruction and professionalism. The university supervisor periodically reviews lesson plans maintained by the candidate in a notebook available onsite. Both the master teacher and university supervisor complete and submit, on-line, a final Progress Report near the end of the assignment. A draft of the Progress Report is shared with and signed by the candidate before it is finalized. To obtain a grade of Credit, each of the final Progress Reports must contain:
- No more than four performance competency phases ratings of 1 and 2 (Initial Competency)
- No rating of 1 in Domain A: Making subject matter comprehensible to students, or in
SED 554 Teaching Event
PACT (Performance Assessment for California Teachers) is a consortium of teacher preparation programs at a number of California Universities. These institutions have joined together to develop a teacher performance assessment, the Teaching Event (TE). Successful completion of the TE, which measures all thirteen Teacher Performance Expectations (TPEs), will be required to earn a California Preliminary Multiple Subject or Single Subject Teaching Credential. The SED 554 Preliminary Teaching Event was modified from the PACT Teaching Event (TE) in order to prepare you to successfully complete the TE for the PACT required in SED 555.
The SED 554 Preliminary TE is an extended documentation of a lesson plan in the first semester of student teaching. It is intended to be a capstone performance that integrates the learning throughout the teacher preparation program. It concentrates on 2 lessons (or hours) of teaching. It is structured in sections corresponding to context for learners, planning, teaching, assessing, and reflecting.
