TEXT:  Beginning Algebra with Applications by Aufmann, Barker, and Lockwood (Seventh Ed.)

ATTENDANCE POLICY:  If you miss more than five days of this class, you may be dropped by the instructor.  If you are not earning a grade of B and miss two days, it is likely that you will be dropped.

HOMEWORK POLICY:  Homework will be assigned daily, and it is expected to be done daily.  However, it will be collected on exam days at the beginning of the exam. A reasonably complete assignment will be given 10 points.  A late assignment will lose 5 points.  Reasonably complete means that all sections assigned have been attempted.  Some simple repetitious problems might be skipped, but some attempt must be shown on the more difficult problems.  You must show your work.  The odd answers can be found at the back of your text. I recommend you to form a study group with classmates. You learn best by teaching others.

EXAMS:  You will have one or two tests for each chapter.  Don't miss them!  There will be no make-ups!  If you know in advance that you will miss an exam, then it is possible to arrange to take it in advance, but no exam will be given after the class has taken it.  You will also have a midterm exam and a final exam. Your lowest chapter exam score will be dropped.

QUIZZES:  Quiz questions will be taken from previously assigned homework assignments. If you are keeping up with the homework the quizzes will be no problem. The purpose of the quizzes and the class work is to let me know how you are doing as well as to let you know how you are doing. The key to surviving a math class is to stay on top of the material. Each chapter builds on the previous material. You need to make sure you are keeping up.

GRADING:  Your grade in the course will be determined the following way:
Quizzes / Class work / Homework 10%
Exams: 60%
Midterm: 10%
Final: 20%
90%-100% will get you an A; 80%-89%, a B; 70%-79%, a C; 60%-69%, a D; and below 60%, an F.

CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR:  All electronic devices must be turned off before entering classroom and cannot be used in the classroom. Please do not talk in class while lecture is in progress but always feel free to ask questions. Respect other students who have questions. Penalties for cheating range from a zero on an exam to dismissal from the course and/or the college.
MATH LAB:  You should visit your TLC Lab. Tutors and instructors, me included, are waiting there--eager to help you.

COURSE OUTLINE:  You will find course information, like course objectives, in the course outline to be found at http://www.canyons.edu/offices/curriculum/public.asp.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:  The students will be able to:
1.  Solve linear equations.
2.  Evaluate expressions involving rational numbers.
3.  Identify and solve elementary word problems.

INTERNSHIPS:  Students with internship experience earn more money and find jobs faster than classmates without internship experience.  To search for paid internships or to learn how to earn college credit using you current job visit http://www.canyons.edu/offices/cwee.
