Course Information Overview

Course Description

This course aims to provide a practical knowledge of English grammar to meet the needs of primary and secondary school teachers. The goal is to provide the students with a foundation in basic grammar to allow for an understanding of word, phrase and sentence structure. To accomplish this goal we will often examine authentic texts to recognize the use of particular structures in context. Students will explore one such text in depth, developing and demonstrating the ability to recognize word classes, verb forms, basic sentence types, and various phrase and clause types.

Student Learning Objectives

Students who successfully complete English 302 will:

1) Be familiar with the terminology used to talk about English grammar

2) Understand the structure of English at the word, phrase and clause level

3) Recognize and create basic sentence types; recognize the components making up complex sentences

4) Have a basic understanding of the meanings conveyed by particular verb forms in certain contexts
