Course Information Overview

Course Description

English 301 provides an introduction to the field of linguistics. The course offers an overview of many of the sub-disciplines of linguistics: phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and discourse analysis. The course also provides an introduction to first and second language acquisition and language variation (including social and regional varieties). Students will address several homework assignments that ask them to analyze language data at different levels. Students are not expected to have prior knowledge of linguistics.

Student Learning Objectives

Students who successfully complete English 301 will:

1) Have an introductory understanding of various sub-disciplines of linguistics

2) Demonstrate the ability to analyze language data at an introductory level

3) Be familiar with terminology and some major concepts and issues relevant to the study of language.
