Chapter 17 Answers

And then he drew his flaming sword and smote
through all the world.

cirman hlude ond gristbitian.
Then they together all began to shout, to cry
out loudly and gnash teeth.
6. Ge ealdras tonymað ða gatu, and up
ahebbað ða ecan gatu.
You princes open those gates, and lift up those
eternal gates.
7. For ðon ðu us ðus dydest, we
hit ðe forgyldað.
Because as you did thus for us, we will repay
it to you.
[There is no future tense in Old English, but
the sense of the sentence allows us to interpret
the present tense as the future.]
8. Nu ge ðus feor hider on urne eard in
becomon.
Now you have come thus far hither into our land.
9. Þa het heo gesomnian ealle þa
gelærdestan menn and þa leorneras,
and him andweardum het secgan þæt
swefn.
Then she commanded those most learned men and
those students all together, and commanded him
to answer about that dream.
10. Þa se wyrm onwoc, wroht wæs
geniwad.
Then the dragon awoke, strife was renewed.
