How to use Mattie's Maps - ESRI's ArcMap Online and ArcGIS Explorer

.

ArcMap Online and ArcGIS Explorer are web mapping applications from ESRI, the industry leader in geo-spatial technologies.

These maps have some advantages over the Google Earth products, and some disadvantages. Chiefly though, they allow persons with an account to manipulate the display of data on the map. That data is contained in a spreadsheet-like table that is dynamically linked to the map. So, for example, if there is a data table with many columns of data (income, education, crime, ethnicity); visitors to this map can display income, and then change it so the map displays education levels.

In addition to the content provided by map authors at CSUN, there are hundreds of layers of data available from government and private organizations that are shared via ESRI's servers, or just somewhere out on the internet (including many Google earth files with .kmz and .kml extension)

There are two viewers that do basically the same thing, but they have a different look and feel. Both allow you to share maps, embed them in your own webpage and save versions of your own.
