Dining-Out Recommendations
Always inform your server and/or a manager of your gluten-free needs. Follow up with questions about ingredients and preparation if necessary. Here are suggestions for improving your safety when dining-out:
- Tell your server "I have a serious gluten allergy. Could you please inform the chef."
- If the restaurant has a gluten-free menu, clarify that you do have a gluten allergy and not a preference.
- Choose to dine at non-peak hours when you feel the staff have adequate time to pay special attention to your needs, clean the grill, change gloves, etc.
- Ask to speak to a kitchen manager or chef, especially if the restaurant does not have a designated gluten-free menu or if you feel that your server is not able to answer your questions. Even if a server is well-intentioned, they likely have little control of how the food is prepared after they put in your order. Inform the chef/manager that you cannot eat gluten and must be very careful with how food is prepared.
- Questions to Ask:
Pasta: Is the pasta cooked in shared water? Can it be cooked in a dedicated pot?
Tortilla Chips and French Fries: Are they fried in shared cooking oil with other menu items? If so, which menu items (any which contain gluten)?
ANY fried food (including garnishes): Is it breaded? If breaded in cornstarch or rice flour, is it prepared in a space seperate from regular flour? Is it fried in shared cooking oil? Can it be fried in its own pan instead?
Meat: How is the meat marinated? Is it cooked on a grill shared with other meats? Is it possible instead to cook it in a clean pan or skillet?
