Course Description
The majority of students in this course are planning to major in Mathematics, Physics, or Engineering. Math 350 with a grade of "C" or better is a prerequisite for Math 455. Here is a list of topics to be covered during the semester with the corresponding sections from the book.
- Introduction to Complex Numbers Sections 1.1,1.2, and 1.3.
- Analytic Functions Sections 1.3,1.4,1.5,1.6.
- Contour Integrals Section 2.1.
- Cauchy's Theorem Sections 2.2, 2.3,2.4,2.5.
- Power Series Sections 3.1,3.2,3.3.
- Calculus of Residues Sections 4.1,4.2,4.3,4.4.
- Conformal Mappings Sections 5.2.
Not all material that you are supposed
to learn will be covered in lecture. You are expected to read the book
in detail. You will learn best by trying to read the sections BEFORE each lecture and being prepared to pay special attention in lecture to
those parts that were most difficult for you to understand. Just as one
cannot develop muscles or endurance by watching sports, one cannot learn
mathematics by watching lectures only. Doing all the homework is the only
reliable way to learn mathematics. If you find it difficult, do MORE problems.

Hints and Extra Help
If you are having problems with the material try the following suggestions.
- Read the material beforehand, try to do the problems on your own. In this way you can ask me how to solve that particular problem, or to clarify some concept in the book that you did not quite understand.
- Try to form a study group with some of your peers. One gains a lot from discussing the way to solve problems, and the time you spend studying will be more enjoyable.
- Go to office hours with all your questions and doubts.
- If you think you need a lot more help consider hiring a private tutor.
