The course will be the review of high school algebra. Starting form elementary calculations we will revise the basics of analysis and geometry. The course is designed for audience with various mathematical background. For the further information and an overview, please, read the syllabus: PostScript (64.3K) , Adobe Acrobat (57.8K) , Latex (6K) .

Classes schedule:

Check the Progress Bars to see what homework numbers are assigned.

The final is scheduled on December 17, 2001. The time will be 01:30pm--04:30pm. The place of the exam can be determined from the following. Read it carefully!
Sections 031, 032, 033, 034, and 041! You auditorium will be Smith H 100.
Sections 042 and 043! You auditorium will be Smith H 231.
Sections 044 and 045! You auditorium will be Smith H 331.

REMEMBER!!! All students must have their official University I.D. card with them at the time of the final exam and must show it to one of the proctors when handing in their exam. The proctor will NOT accept a final exam from a student without an I.D. card.

Some more information about the final: The final will consist of 15 multiple choice questions and 6 questions that will be hand-graded. That means for the last six you are supposed to show the solution and not just give the final answer. This 6 problems will require more time then multi-choice problems and they will be pretty much like to what we had on the midterms.

A possible advice could be to make sure that you understand, first of all, each problem from the midterms. When this is done make sure you understand each homework problem. The final will cover the whole course so you should expect all the stuff you do not like. The more practice you have the better you are prepared. Studing the theory will help you understand better the practical problems.

There will be help sessions and reviews in class. Bring the problems you do not understand there.

The Final will be approximately of the same hardness as the third midterm. In any case, do not panic. The new difficulty is that you will have 3 hours instead of usual 1. Get ready for a long work. Remember the only purpose of exam is to check how much you worked during the semester.

Information about the Midterms:
Midterm 1.
Midterm 2.
Midterm 3.

Information about the extra projects:

You can raise your score for the midterm by completing extra project. The score can be raised up to 65 points (C+).

Every project will be assigned individually. Send me a message when you have time to visit my office and I will try to find an opening in my schedule. To assign a project I need see your previous midterms, so, please, have them with you.

One extra project will consist of 15 problems from some section in the textbook. You solve all 15 problems and return it to me for grading. The maximum you can get in this situation is 20 points.

You can get 30 points for the project if you choose to defend you project in person. In this case you will have to defend at the blackboard two randomly chosen problems from your project. Note that you have to let me know in advance if you plan to do so.

You extra credits can be added to each midterm score until it exceeds 65.

Example: You have 49 for the first midterm and 48 for the second and have completed the project. Suppose I granted you 20 points for the project. You decided to share 20 points in the following way: 16 points will be added to the score of the first midterm 49+16=65 and 4 points will be added to the second 48+4=52. Your result is 65 and 52. Note that you can make up to 3 projects in total but you will have only two weeks to complete them. Two weeks is a very short time.
