COMMENTS: The results of the midterm in the average are good! Most of you demonstrated a solid understanding of the most important concepts.

Problem #4 was definitely difficult, all the rest were fairly good. I gave problem #4 to demonstrate that there is a large space for you to grow. Please notice, that to solve problem #4 you were not to know anything special. You had everything you were need and some of you got the right idea. Still I admit that this problem is fair for the math major students and, of course, is not designed for our course, therefore I added 10 point to every score.

What was not good. The results of the midterm prove that only a little part of you listens to the lecture attentively. On the end of the Friday, October 19th lecture we discussed how to solve Problem #4. Most of you have ignored this hint. I want also mention the Average Rate Of Change. We did it twice in class and once on a help session. Still some of you have no clue what this Average Rate of Change is all about. The rest of the problems was OK.

Unfortunately, many of you have difficulties with the new material. New means the material which you did not have in high school. There is only one solution to this problem, it is to study hard. The special attention should be given to the material we have on lecture. Believe me or not, but understanding of general questions is the key. If you will only concentrate on examples in numbers you will have to memorize everything. Instead of seeing the whole picture you will see a messy puzzle. And you understand how long it takes to find a necessary piece when the puzzle is mixed. Spend a time! Combine the puzzle in the nice picture! Then you will always find the necessary instrument on its place and ready to work.

I promise not to include a problem like the problem #4 in the third midterm. The rest of the problems are pretty much what we will have on the third one.
