Welcome to the American Landscape Project Web Site
About the Archive
The American Landscape Project was conceived as a means to collect, preserve and make publicly available the slide and photographic collections of geographers and other scholars of the American Landscape.
Too often these slide collections, though providing incredibly valuable witness to the shaping of 20th Century America, have no audience as they are put to rest on bookshelves, garages or even into trash bins.
It is the goal of the American Landscape Project to gather together such slide collections so that they can be digitally reproduced and published on the internet.
As the on-line collection grows, it may evolve into an important visual record of American landscape as it has evolved over the past 100 years.
Please feel free to tour the fabulous variety and great regularities of the American landscape.
I hope that teachers, students and researchers find creative ways to use these images as they seek to come to a more complete understanding the United States.
You may search for images either by using the interactive, clickable maps or by entering key words in the searchable database. Students are encouraged to peruse the bibliography of landscape research so that they may combine the visual imagery presented herein with the scholarly discussions about landscapes.
Most important, we encourage visitors to go out and experience America first hand. Taste the foods, hear the songs and see the scenes available to them on the open road. Remember to take your camera!
