Celebrated Human Rights Activist to Lecture at CSUN

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., April 17, 2006) — Cal State Northridge’s College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and the SAGE society (Study, Activity, Growth, Enrichment) are sponsoring a lecture to raise awareness and promote peace processes throughout Africa on Wednesday April 25, at the university.

John Prendergast, a renowned expert on genocide, civil war and conflict management, will present on "Not on Our Watch: The Mission to End Genocide in Darfur and Beyond," at 7 p.m. in the West Valley Room at the University Student Union, located on the east side of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge.

Prendergast is the author of eight books on Africa. His latest publication, Not on Our Watch was co-authored with actor/activist Don Cheadle. Prendergast will also be appearing on two television shows in conjunction with his book tour: CNN’s "Larry King Live" and ABC’s 7 "Oprah Winfrey Show."

"John Prendergast is at the forefront of bringing attention to the crisis in Darfur," said assistant professor of political science Jennifer De Maio. "He’s a dynamic speaker who will share his experiences ‘on the ground’ and help us better understand what is happening in Darfur, and what can be done to stop it."

Prendergast was involved in a number of peace negotiations at the White House and State Department during the Clinton Administration. He has also worked for the United Nations, members of congress and many human rights organizations.

De Maio, who is coordinating the event, said Prendergast is currently a senior advisor to the International Crisis Group and co-founder of the ENOUGH campaign, a project to abolish genocide and mass atrocity in Africa and beyond. "This is a rare opportunity for the CSUN community to actually hear from someone who’s been in the trenches and has a keen understanding of the crisis," she said.

Parking costs $4, available in Lot G4, on the corner of Zelzah Avenue and Plummer St.

A reception and book signing will follow the lecture.
