What:
The first graders at CHIME Charter Elementary School will celebrate the opening of their new community, Rock ‘N Roll City, with a speech from their mayor, an official ribbon cutting and presentation of the "key to the city" to school principal Julie Fabrocini.
As part of a civics lesson on understanding the various aspects of a community, the first graders created their own city, complete with a city hall, bank, police station and businesses. The students voted on the city’s name, elected a mayor and city council and set about establishing their community.
CHIME Charter Elementary School and its sister campus, CHIME Charter Middle School, are independent schools that provide free public education through affiliation with the Los Angeles Unified School District. The schools serve as demonstration and teacher-training sites for Cal State Northridge's nationally acclaimed Michael D. Eisner College of Education. They have been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as national models for full inclusion of students with disabilities and for providing a blueprint for local schools across the country.
